When/how did you join Marsh?
I graduated from Temple University in 2016 and majored in Risk Management and Insurance. I first came to Marsh in 2015 as a Summer TRAC associate in aviation. Through majoring in RMI, I was able to learn about the various career opportunities such as brokerage, underwriting, risk management, etc. After further exploring brokering, and in particular Marsh, I felt it was a company I would like to work for. After my summer internship with aviation, I knew Marsh was the right place for me.
Describe your time in the TRAC Program
Some of the most important skills that are required as a broker are communication, time management, and social skills. Being a broker, and having both client and market access, requires you to portray the risk to the markets, negotiate with underwriters and further explain these conversations with our clients. In turn, we also need to describe coverages and solutions for our clients in an accurate and efficient manner.
Working with clients and colleagues in various time locations and cities around the world also requires time management skills. You need to be responsive to deadlines, but also able to adapt to urgent requests. In addition to these skills, building rapport through social skills with colleagues, clients and underwriters, allows you to the ability connect with one another and get through difficult situations that may arise.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I am an aviation insurance broker focusing on Aviation Products, General Aviation and the Unmanned Aircraft Systems sectors. Working in a specialty within Marsh affords me the opportunity to engage with both our clients and insurance markets on a daily basis. My primary role involves servicing day-to-day client needs, negotiating with underwriters and interacting with colleagues across the world in order to provide solutions and insurance coverages to our clients.
My favorite part of my role is the consistent interaction with clients and underwriters on a daily basis. As a broker in a niche industry such as aviation, you are consistently learning and there is always a new opportunity ahead!
Do you have any advice for candidates or incoming TRAC associates?
To the incoming candidates I would recommend that they ask a lot of questions and take every opportunity that is presented to them. That being said, time management is critical from the beginning and they will need to prioritize their work load accordingly. I would also recommend they take the time to sit with their various department and practice leaders as these employees have a wealth of knowledge about their particular fields and the industry as a whole.
