Heidi | TRAC Associate

When/how did you join Marsh?
I graduated from Santa Clara University with degrees in Communications & Political Science. I started my career at Marsh as a Summer TRAC Associate with the Global Risk Management department in San Francisco. After my 10 week internship, I was offered a position as a full-time TRAC Associate in Dallas, Texas. I have been working with the property department for the last year and have enjoyed every moment.
Describe your time in the TRAC Program
One of my favorite aspects of the TRAC program is the ample amount of resources that Marsh has to offer. Due to Marsh being one of the world’s leading insurance broker and risk advisors, I have been exposed to multiple different opportunities and experiences. For example, I have worked with many clients in varies industries and attended client meetings. Marsh has given me the opening to work with top individuals in the industry, such as many underwriters and head of the national property team, who have given me their support and guidance as I have begun my career.
At the beginning of the program, each TRAC is teamed up with a buddy who often is a current or recent graduate of the TRAC Program. My buddy has become both a mentor and advisor, who assists me in navigating Marsh’s structure.
What does a typical day look like for you?
As a TRAC Associate, your days vary allowing you to never have the same day. I am constantly being presented different opportunities, which makes each day a new challenge. Working as a client advisor, you must always be readily available to your clientele. The root of the job is based around the responsibilities of answering emails, participating in telephone conferences, and preparing for or attending in-person meetings. We dedicate our time to learning our client’s businesses and then create documents to illustrate their unique risks and exposures to protect their balance sheet.
I have learned that attention to details is crucial in our industry. Individuals must be able to work independently and collaboratively to solve problems and create solutions for clients. In order to stand out, you need to take initiative, work harder than the average colleague, and let those around you know you are willing to help with whatever you can.
Do you have any advice for candidates or incoming TRAC associates?
The best advice I received was in one word: network. It is so important to learn from those around you and develop skills from your colleagues. Most people want to help others and talk about how they advanced in their own careers. Through networking you gain insight and understanding in areas that you may not have otherwise been introduced to. Be open to new ideas and welcome guidance from those willing to offer it. Be proactive in gaining more knowledge. Be determined to work hard.
