Do Pet Professionals need Insurance?

In 2019, there were almost 29 million pets owned by Australians1. To put that in perspective, there are more pets in Australian households than there are humans. With this continued increase in pet ownership in Australian households, it’s easy to see why the need for specialised pet services is also on the rise. Now more so than ever, it’s important for pet service businesses to understand their risk needs and arrange insurance that meets their unique industry requirements.

At Marsh, we have been arranging pet service insurance for over 10 years. Through our experience and industry relationships, we arrange insurance solutions designed for the pet industry.  The insurance solutions available with Marsh include enhancements to policy coverage such as, automatic cover for attendance at expos or demonstrations and a CCC limit including animals in care, Loss of Keys and Veterinary Fees as an optional cover.

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability insurance can provide you cover if a pet owner or their pet is injured while under your service. While it may be infrequent, accidents do happen, and there are many different situations where liability insurance can help minimise the risk of being the subject of a claim.

Take the following example - During an obedience group training class, one dog injures another. If this injury occurred while the dog was in your class, you could be liable to pay for the dog’s injury and medical costs.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

As a dog walker, groomer or other pet professional, offering advice or a service to customers is part of your day-to-day job. If a customer claims your business provided incorrect advice or service, you could be held financially liable, putting serious strain on your business success.

Professional indemnity policies can provide financial protection for the damages that may arise from an act, omission or breach of duty in the course of conducting your business. It can include cover for settlements, judgements, investigation costs and defence costs.
