Risk Finance Team Manager, Risk Finance Practice
I was drawn to insurance as I was always strong with numbers throughout my education and my ambition to become an actuary felt like a natural progression post university. The world of insurance allows me to apply the various analytical techniques that I have studied on real life applications.
In the Risk Finance Practice we work on a variety of projects involving clients from differing industries with diverse insurance needs. We typically look to model their insurance risks and we use statistical models to forecast what we believe to be their claims experience over the forthcoming year. We can then evaluate the value that their insurance programme provides, while also challenging whether the level of insurance currently purchased is optimal.
What I love about my job is the variety. We cover a whole suite of risks; ranging from employers liability to cyber for large aviation clients to local councils. The challenges that each of these risks pose from an analytical viewpoint means that you are always thinking about how to engage your analytical techniques to best reflect the risk at hand.
The Graduate Development Programme is a crucial part of Marsh’s future success. The process is rigorous and the individuals that make it onto that programme are driven and motivated. They come with good ideas and the infrastructure allows them to harness their skills and ideas into a constructive form that helps Marsh to keep innovating its products as well as developing its people.
The best piece of advice I've been given which I'd pass on is to perfect the “elevator pitch”. Another key learning that I always keep in mind is to be succinct and address the question that the client really wants answering.
