World Energy Trilemma Index 2016: Benchmarking the Sustainability of National Energy Systems

The World Energy Trilemma Index 2016 highlights the challenges of balancing energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability. Balancing these three goals constitutes a “trilemma” and is the basis for prosperity and competitiveness, according to the report.

Prepared by Oliver Wyman, Marsh & McLennan Companies’ Global Risk Center, and the World Energy Council, this annual ranking of 125 countries is an important yardstick by which policymakers, developers, investors, and producers and consumers of energy assess sustainability of energy policies.

The World Energy Trilemma Index 2016 report includes:

• Key findings from top-performing countries (13 countries achieved a triple-A score in balancing all three dimensions of the trilemma).
• Highlights of the global energy sector’s overall progress in shifting its priorities toward a more balanced energy mix.
• A listing of countries on the “watch list” — for both positive and negative reasons.
• Six regional profiles and 125 individual country profiles.

The new report also revisits five focus areas (from its companion report, released earlier this year) to drive progress on the energy trilemma — and offers guidance in translating the trilemma goals of energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability into tangible actions.

In addition, an interactive Trilemma Index Tool and Pathway Calculator are now available to delve deeper into a country’s trilemma performance and what it takes to build a sustainable energy system.
